Fitting dental implants is a long process requiring the jawbone and gums to heal from each stage to move to the next. Therefore, patients have to book more than one appointment with their dentist. Here’s what the process looks like:
- The first appointment is a consultation session where one of our experienced dentists will outline the procedure for you. During the initial consultation, your dentist will answer questions about what the implant will look like, how long it lasts, and whether the procedure will be painful. Your dentist will discuss different options and evaluate your eligibility for implants.
- The next steps involve taking the colour of your teeth to match the shade of your implant with existing teeth. Your dentist may take impressions, which they use to prepare a visual model of the final results. Most importantly, they assess the condition of your jawbone, which is where the implant is inserted. Depending on your dentist, this process can be completed during the initial consultation or a second visit.
- Patients who have a weaker or thinner jawbone need bone augmentation surgery first. It ensures that the implant fits securely in the jawbone.
- The next appointment involves fitting the implant, after which you’ll need to wait for osseointegration to complete. During this time, your doctor will provide you with a provisional restoration.
- When the implant has healed, your dentist takes an impression of your teeth to design a customised crown or bridge.
- At the final appointment, your doctor removes the provisional restoration and fits the crown or bridge.
Dental implants are a permanent replacement for damaged or missing teeth. Various factors can impact how long they last, such as the material used to make the implant, the patient’s age, and whether they take steps to preserve it.
